My brilliant co-author Julie Coates was critiquing a community college business plan for them. What she found was disturbing. The college is proposing to create a training program aimed at an industry and occupation, construction, when the state is actually predicting a 3% decline in available jobs for construction in the next few years. This compares with the state's prediction that overall jobs will increase 2%.
Not only that, but the college is targeting baby boomers for the program. So the college is using desperately valuable and limited resources and tax support to blindly create a program that helps no one.
Instead, community colleges should create programs in areas where the jobs are being created, where we actually have a shortage of skilled workers. And that area is? Any area where a four year college degree is required, including S, T, E and M.
In this century, community colleges' new mission is to graduate half of the community's young people with a FOUR year degree. Photo: When it comes to the Pedagogy of the 21st century, my brilliant co-author actually IS Wonder Woman
