A little something to perk up the spirits. . .

Some people complain we rail enthusiasts are too nostalgic. There may be some truth to this, but I think we have good reason to be–-not only railroads, but America itself was, in many ways (though certainly not all) a better place then, at least I think so. For a look at what I consider a tiny, peekhole glimpse into the way things used to be, crank up the speakers for this wonderfully evocative sound recording from the late O. Winston Link, recorded in the town of Rural Retreat, Va., in December of 1957:
