A rally of 10,000-40,000 today at the state capitol kicked off the big Scott Walker recall campaign.
Our NineShift inside source says 105,000 signature have already been collected in just the first 5 days (540,000 needed, so 20% of the way there). Media story here.
Here's funny story from my co-author who was asked to be a volunteer marshal today at the rally.
So there was one woman standing on a ledge who would not come down, no matter what Julie said. The woman said she would be happy to speak with a policeman though. So Julie actually went and got the 3 biggest state patrolmen she could find, and they started walking towards the woman. When the woman saw them she scrambled down and ran off. At which point Julie turned to the biggest state patrolman and said, “Well I guess she didn’t want to speak with you as much as she led me to believe.” Which got a laugh from the state patrolmen.
Before the rally, the police chief met with the volunteer marshals, so they both worked together.
Ed Shultz of The Ed Show on MSNBC was there. Here's a photo from our very busy marshal:
A little something to perk up the spirits. . .
Some people complain we rail enthusiasts are too nostalgic. There may be some truth to this, but I think we have good reason to be–-not only railroads, but America itself was, in many ways (though certainly not all) a better place then, at least I think so. For a look at what I consider a tiny, peekhole glimpse into the way things used to be, crank up the speakers for this wonderfully evocative sound recording from the late O. Winston Link, recorded in the town of Rural Retreat, Va., in December of 1957:
