Gen Y likes unions. And they have good reasons. On the day of this post, dock workers in Los Angeles are on strike, holding up 40% of all goods coming into the country by ship. And we've just seen the first strikes at McDonalds and other fast food chains in New York City. Expect more.
Walking down the street in Madison, Wisc. at the Obama rally we saw this sign in the window and I asked my brilliant co-author Julie Coates why Gen Y likes unions. She said what should have been obvious to me, that young people are generally underpaid, get few if any benefits, and only gets part time work. Yesterday our foster son Sammie called and said in his low wage high stress job he's not "valued" by his employer.
100 years ago unions made life better for people. They just might again.
