Presque Isle is the first town in Vilas County to be infected with garlic mustard, covering at least 10 of the town's 61.7 acres. This invasive plant spreads quickly and dominates any area it touches by crowding out all native plants, monopolizing their light, moisture, nutrients, soil, and space. It is extremely difficult to eradicate, as seeds stay viable in the soil for 5-7 years. Merrill Horswill, chair of the PI committee, says that garlic mustard is actually a bigger problem than aquatic invasive species, and that its control is extremely important to the future of our area.
Here's a chance to help with the local infestation of garlic mustard. If you will be at the lake, check your calendars to see if you can help out.
The town of Presque Isle's Terrestrial Invasive Species Partnership will conduct a "Garlic Mustard Pulling Together Day"
SATURDAY, MAY 31

Meet at American Legion Hall
Lunch provided by the Last Wilderness Conservation Association
Bring your own large garbage bag for disposing of the garlic mustard, and a jug of water for washing off your boots.
This is a great opportunity to get more information about this invasive species, and to be a part of controlling its spread in Presque Isle.
