Are you going to be fishing on Carlin Lake this weekend? Please make sure you familiarize yourself with the new bait usages from the DNR. Particularly if you have guests coming from other places in the state, make sure you know about these new regulations.

VHS (viral hemorrhagic septicemia) is a fish disease that has been discovered in Lake Michigan and Lake Winnebago and causes fish to bleed to death. Clearly, VHS has the potential "to cause large-scale fish kills, long-term reductions in wild fish populations, and thus, severe economic impacts on our region." It is certainly something that we don't want in Carlin Lake!
In short, (from the Lakeland Times) "The rules require boaters and anglers, before they leave any body of water, to drain all water from their boats, trailers, bait buckets, and to make sure all fish they take away are dead, including bait fish. This means that anglers must dispose of any leftover bait in a garbage receptable at the landing, or drain the bait bucket and kill the bait fish before taking them home for disposal."
I'm not a fisher-person, but these changes don't seem too dramatic to me, especially considering the threat if VHS begins to be spread around Vilas County.
