Several Carlin Lake residents have a connection to Camp Manito-wish in Boulder Junction, but none for as long or as deep as Jim Stocker's.
Jim has been on the camp's Board of Directors for 26 years, and chair for many of those. One of his greatest satisfactions, though, has probably come from the restoration of the camp lodge, Nash Lodge, in the last year.
As happens in many organizations, a decision had to be made whether it was worth the time and money to restore a beautiful building, or whether is made more sense to build new from the ground up. Jim has spent the last few years in an active leadership position: persuading, raising money, and supervising plans. But even more, he has put in uncounted hours of "sweat equity," and spent time on a stepladder, behind a leaf blower or lawn mower, and many other things that brought no recognition, but just needed to be done.
We have noted other lake residents who have taken volunteer leadership roles in the Presque Isle community, but you probably weren't aware of Jim's long-time leadership at Camp Manito-wish. Sometime when you drive to Boulder, stop by, and see how this stately old building has maintained its beauty, its history, and its usefulness.
