Maybe everyone but me already knows---but I was happy yesterday to discover how good the vegetables are at the "farmer's market" in Presque Isle.
Every Tuesday, from 10 to 4, at Thoma's Market on the corner, a vendor brings fresh vegetables from the Amish auction, west of Wausau. The tomatoes actually tasted like tomatoes, and we had fresh red potatoes and broccoli for supper, and will try the sweet corn when the kids arrive this evening.
This spring I read the book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver, about trying to eat foods produced locally, and was reminded how much better food tastes when it does not have to be packaged and shipped, and how much less petroleum we use when our food is trucked for shorter distances. (It's also an enjoyable narrative about a family attempting to live only off the land.)
I know Val at Stone Soup also has locally-grown vegetables, and I will get over there to see what she has, too. If you know more about what Val has available, will you comment below?
The PI vendor says he is also at the Manitowish Waters flea market each Thursday, if your travels take you in that direction.
Hi Carm,
Stopped at Val's this AM. She had small tomatoes, sugar snap peas, small zuchinni and other stuff. I would call ahead because quantities are limited. You're right about a REAL tomatoe!
