We got a good introduction to terrestrial invasive species when Jeff Burke talked about garlic mustard at our annual meeting. Here is something you can do as a follow-up:
Ted Ritter, the Vilas County invasive species coordinator, announces the following meetings to learn about TIS. Note specifically the one in Boulder Junction on August 20th at 6:30 pm. That meeting is the closest one, and some lake residents have already mentioned their intention to attend.
TERRESTRIAL INVASIVE PLANTS of concern to forest and wetland areas in and around VILAS COUNTY
The following invasive plants pose serious threats to our forest and wetland habitats:
GARLIC MUSTARD, JAPANESE KNOTWEED, ASIATIC HONEYSUCKLES, BUCKTHORN, SPOTTED KNAPWEED, REED CANARY GRASS
All have become established in Vilas County. Do you know where? Are any of them on your property? Do you know how to manage these species or the potential consequences of ignoring them?
Public informational meetings will be conducted by the Land & Water Conservation Department. These events will officially launch Vilas County's Terrestrial Invasive Species (TIS) initiative. Attendees will learn why these plants are of concern and how to identify and manage them. Formation of a Cooperative Weed Management Area (CWMA) and the role of private property owners will also be discussed. There is no advance registration for the meetings.
