Last Thursday, a fire destroyed the lodge at Powerhorn Mountain near Bessemer. No one was hurt, and the ski slopes remained open for business over the weekend.
The fire was reported to have started just before noon in a supply closet off the kitchen. All nearby fire departments were called, and some remained on the site overnight.
All rental equipment was saved and is usable, but all merchandise in the ski shop was ruined.
News reports say that no jobs will be lost, that the resort will remain open for skiing, and that the lodge will be rebuilt when investigations are complete.
Even for those of us who are not downhill skiers, it's a shame to see this loss to a local business.
