The Discovery Center and the Friends of the Van Vliet Hemlocks are sponsoring a naturalist-led hike--for free--on Saturday, October 22nd, at 10:00 am. Now that leaves are mostly fallen from our trees, the views of these big trees should be perfect.
The non-profit organization describes the property this way:
The 400-acre parcel has more than 1 1/2 miles of shoreline. Its forested stand represents a rare remnant of the northern hardwood–hemlock forest, once the largest and most characteristic of northern WI. It retains many of the characteristics of old-growth forests, such as large live trees, snags, and large fallen trees on land and water.
I know several Carlin residents have enjoyed taking guests to hike these lovely woods, and this opportunity for a guided experience sounds fun.
Participation is limited, so click here to register for the free hike.
Thanks, Duanne, for passing along this information.
