This title, another from a favorite Christmas carol, seems to fit the winter solstice this week. (Although it's sunny this morning, with a predicted high of 30 degrees.)
With sunrise at 7:38 and sunset at 4:14, the days are as short as they will get, with about eight and a half hours of daylight. Evening seems to arrive in the middle of the afternoon, so it's a pleasure to plug in the lights of the Christmas trees.
A friend sent me the following encouraging poem, which she keeps hanging in her kitchen each December:
I heard a bird sing in the dark of December,
A magical sound and sweet to remember.
It is nearer to Spring than it was in September.
I heard a bird sing in the dark of December.
