It's no surprise to learn that there are many different opinions about any issue! And, that's true with my recent report about the demise of pesky and harmful insects in this winter's freezing cold.
In last week's local paper, a headline read, "Gypsy moths, emerald ash borers, tent caterpillars, and others probably are fine in the long run." Bummer!
This article quotes the DNR plant pest and disease specialist, who says that winter temperatures "don't really impact, in a significant way, our forest pests and diseases." He says these insects can tolerate even temps to 40 below zero. And, current research doesn't support our hopes that ticks, gypsy moths, and ash borers may be wiped out by this cold.
I guess we will see, come summer, if anyone can notice any difference.
This beautiful photo of yesterday's morning sundogs comes from Linda Davis.
She says the streaks were "just breathtaking, shooting way above the tree tops and were bright shimmery pink." Thanks, Linda!
