I'm not a birder, by any stretch of the definition, but I know many of our friends and neighbors are. The Discovery Center is holding their annual Bird Festival next weekend, and I believe Ruchs and Swifts are planning to attend. You can still register, I know, if you'd enjoy learning more about local birds.
The Discovery Center includes this very cool poster on their Facebook page, (click on the underlined link) where you can see illustrations of birds, as well as hear their songs with just a click. (Compliments of the Minnesota DNR.) The site took a while to load on our computer, given our internet speed, but maybe it will go more quickly for you, wherever you are.
Weather update, for those of you holding your breaths about the Big Annual Carlin Lake Ice-Out Sweepstakes:
Cracks are starting to be visible in the ice, leading out from shore, and I judge that the color of the ice is darkening. Predictions for next week are for 50's during the days, and 40's each night, so those of you with designated dates for next week have reason to remain hopeful.
We hear---and see---that ice cover will limit this weekend's fishing opener to local rivers, for those who are brave enough to get out. Driving home yesterday, I did follow a car towing a boat, so it appears that a few fisher-folk are going to try to get started this weekend.
