Mark your calendars

 

You probably want to have these summer Carlin events marked on your calendar.

1. Coming up first is the spring meeting of the board of directors, to be held at the home of Bob and Judy Ruch on Saturday, June 14th at 9:00.   Officers and board members are encouraged to attend, to make plans for summer and to hear the report of the nominating committee.   All lake residents are invited, as usual.   The Ruchs ask that you bring a plate of some breakfast item to share, if you are able.

2. On Saturday, June 28th, Carol Brewer and family ask us to join them at the Presque Isle Cemetery at 11:00 am for the interment service for our friend Ricks.  The family invites us back to the Brewer home for a light lunch following the service.

3. The book club's annual luncheon (and men's breakfast day, of course) will be Tuesday, July 1st at 9:00 am at the home of Sue Straus.  Even if you are not a book club "regular," please know you are invited.

4. Our annual pontoon float is scheduled for Saturday, July 12th, at 4:00 pm, with a rain date on Sunday, the 13th.   Bring yourselves, your guests, and an appetizer of some kind to share.

5. Annual meeting weekend is always the last Saturday morning in July, the 26th.   More details will follow after the board meeting.

 

It's a pleasure, isn't it, to see this new growth showing up on our conifers!

 

How some folks spend their time on a holiday weekend

 

I think Bill and Julie Draves really know how to relax!   Evidence?   Listen to the problem they spent time trying to solve on a recent weekend visit to the lake.

"Ye Olde Shxxxxx something. 

            (Bill, I don't know how to spell this Irish word either---shilleleagh??)

" Even if I and many other non-Irish could remember the name, how would you Google or phone book it,

Under “Ye” or “Olde” or “Shxxxxx?” 

Julie and I have come up with some alternative names for you, as our Northwoods voice of the people, to disseminate:

3.If the owner’s name is Stuart, then Irish Stu

4.Irish Spring

5.Ye Olde Trail’s End

6.If it is a gentleman’s club, then Notre Dames"

 

Do you think the owners of the new Trails' End will be interested in the results of the Draves' brainstorming?   

Bill comments that they had a great time swimming in this still barely-warm lake water.   Maybe the cool water inspires creativity in those who "soak their heads" in it!

Well-deserved recognition for Judy: Invader Crusader award

 

The following letter is from Ted Ritter, the Vilas County Invasive Species Coordinator.  Carlin friends know Judy has been working for many summers on this program, educating youngsters to prevent the spread of invasive species .   What a pleasure to have Judy receiving this state-wide recognition for her creative work!

 

Please join me in congratulating Judy Ruch from Presque Isle, WI as a 2014 recipient of the Wisconsin Invasive Species Council’s Invader Crusader Award. 

The award recognizes Judy’s unique and long running contribution to slowing the spread of aquatic invasive species through youth education.  Judy long ago recognized the importance and long term payback of educating children.  She conceived the idea of a children's story hour that would be delivered to young audiences at northwoods area libraries.  The story of her inspiration for this program, which she titled“Let the Little Ones Lead”, is attached.

Judy developed a lesson plan, wrote song lyrics and a book, and in 2008 took her story hour program on tour to libraries within Vilas County.  The response by kids, parents, librarians and the general public was extremely positive and immediate. 

With assistance during 2009 from Christal Campbell, WDNR/UWEX AIS Education Specialist, Judy’s program was promoted state-wide through the Wisconsin Library Association and the WDNR.  The lesson plan, song lyrics, book text and instructional information reside on the WDNR website for public use at: http://dnr.wi.gov/lakes/invasives/cbcwstory/Default.aspx

Judy and husband, Bob, are summer residents on Carlin Lake in northwestern Vilas County.  Both have been active supporters of the Town of Presque Isle Lakes Committee since the committee’s creation approximately nine years ago.  While the award recognizes Judy only, we all know that behind every good woman there is a good man, and Bob has supported Judy’s commitment to educating young children. 

To this very day, Judy and Bob are still taking their program on the road.  Just yesterday, before attending a Clean Boats Clean Waters refresher training in Presque Isle, they had been in Mercer, WI delivering their message at the K-12 school.  Judy and Bob reside in central Iowa and had planned their spring return to the northwoods in time to visit several area schools before the end of the school year.  Talk about award winning dedication!

Judy and Bob will attend the Invader Crusader awards ceremony hosted by the Invasive Species Council at Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Madison on June 5^th.
