This weekend in Presque Isle

 

I hope I'm not too late to remind you to patronize the annual rummage sale at the PI Community Center today, Friday, and tomorrow, Saturday.    Several of our neighbors, Lions and Lioness and volunteers, have worked hard to put this fund-raiser together.   Stop by for good deals!

And, Sunday, the first Sunday of August, is always the Fireman's Parade and Picnic.   Come enjoy the parade, nibble a brat or some sweet corn, and maybe drop some bucks into the fireman's boot there for donations.    We talk often, I know, about how fortunate we are to be able to depend on these volunteers in our community.

Plus, it looks as though the weather is going to be great, so we'll be able to greet one another out and about on the lake.

As part of Saturday's annual meeting, folks were encouraged to keep visiting this site and to keep using the Carlin blog.   (If you are reading this right now, of course you are among the people who check in regularly.)

I just looked back and learn that this summer makes it eight years that we have been keeping in touch with one another through this blog site.   It's hard to believe it's been that long!

 

You all know this----but in addition to making a bookmark to save the web address which is showing at the top of the page you are looking at, it's also easy just to google Carlin Lake Association, to make the blog appear, whatever computer or tablet you are using.

 

 

 

 

 

I appreciate your support very much, and thank you for following here, when there's lots of news and even when there's almost none!

 

 

Lots of friends at annual meeting

 

Many Carlin neighbors took time away from a perfect July Saturday to gather at Mary Watkins' for our once-a-year business meeting.    It was terrific to have this meeting so well-attended.   If you weren't able to be here, one of the things you missed was delicious treats provided by the board of directors.  

 

 

 

In spite of being indoors on a sunshiny day, these Carlin neighbors were willing to pause and give me their big smiles.

 

I think I snapped the only moment that little Bentley did not have a smile on her face!

Community Service

 

Cecil, Bob, and Duanne may have had sore backs and knees this week, after working for a full day to help construct this bog-walk at Pipke Park in Presque Isle.     I understand this is the second phase of the Pipke Park trails.  

 

 

 

Thanks to Bob for these photos, thanks to all three men for their valuable volunteer work, and thanks for the reminder to make use of this convenient and attractive community resource.

ATV issue---now at the state level

 

Do you have time this summer to send one more email, this time opposing opening ATV trails in Wisconsin's state parks and forests??

As I understand, a hidden item in the recent state budget directed the DNR to inventory trails going through state land, a task completed in June.    Now ATV lobbyists are meeting with with "DNR departments" to say they need more trails through state parks and forests so ATV riders can "enjoy nature in our state parks and forests."

 

State residents may send comments and opinions until July 31st, a deadline which was just recently extended.

Buchholz has been quoted as saying, "“Local flavor will influence whether roads are opened.   If communities support motorized use, it’s more likely roads will be opened based on ecological, economic, and social criteria."

 

"Local flavor" here seems to mean what the general public thinks about opening ATV trails through forests and parks in Vilas County.  We've been told that the more emails Aaron Buchholz receives saying our "local flavor" is working just fine without ATV traffic, the more he will be convinced that ATV traffic would not be an asset in our part of the state.

 

Please make use of the extended deadline, and compose and send a short email to Buchholz before the end of July.   How about asking the state to extend biking and hiking trails, and saving our beautiful ecosystem??

 

 

The following is part of the text of an "official" email that I received.   

 

1)   Buried in the budget was a statute to map and potentially open thousands of miles of primitive roads in state parks/forests/ refuges and natural areas.  The draft guidance for state statue 23.116(3)  was finalized at the NRB’s June 24 meeting and awaits public comment.

 

2)  This little known statute can actually “trump” existing property Master Plans and allow motorized vehicles in state forests and parks.

 

3)  Section Chief Aaron Buchholz & Specialist Teague Prichard will oversee the required planning & mapping teams which will inventory and develop motorized access on state lands.

 

”This process will allow the DNR the ability to come up with a plan and engage the public before anything becomes final”, according to Buchholz.  “Local flavor will influence whether roads are opened.   If communities support motorized use, it’s more likely roads will be opened based on ecological, economic, and social criteria. It might also provide more route opportunity for motorized recreation”.

Judy emails to say that she, Bob, and Noah had a fun adventure Wednesday afternoon.

"As we returned home yesterday about 3:00 pm,  a one- or two-year-old bear was on the road facing Krassel's "hut."   We don't know if it was exploring the state of raspberry development or what but it took off into the woods upon hearing our car.  Pretty exciting for all of us who haven't seen a bear in a long time."

Jim Luedtke also has reported several bear sightings, along both Hwy P and Hwy W.    So, on your next hike through the woods, maybe you'll want to whistle while you walk.

As usual, we had beautiful weather, delicious snacks, good neighbors, and plenty laughter at this year's annual July pontoon float.  

 

But, a few things will help us remember that this is the year that was.  

Bill and Judy Schelp and Jim and Betsy Luedtke were able to join us for the first time.  

 

 

 

 

 

This year, Duanne arrived too late and had to paddle his own canoe.

 

 

This year, Betsy and Noah Meyer (Ruch) jumped in for a swim.

 

 

 

 

This year, Captain Cecil navigated all five pontoons on a scenic circle around the lake.   It would be fun to see a photo taken from the shore.

9th Annual Book Club Luncheon

 

So, that means that after our meeting yesterday, we are starting our tenth year as a book club!  Yay!

Our group was a big smaller than some Julys, but you can see by these smiles that we had just as much fun as usual.  (You can click to enlarge, you know.)    The salads and desserts were delicious, and most of us ate WAY more than we usually do for lunch.

Weren't we fortunate?

 

What a beautiful holiday weekend!    If you were at the lake, you know we had a cloudburst bringing about one inch of rain on Friday at suppertime, but otherwise, perfect July weather.   

Today it's been raining all morning, and prediction is wet the rest of the day, too---so glad this is happening on Monday!

 

We are having a busy week at Carlin this week.   Remember the book club meeting and luncheon at Linda's tomorrow morning, and men's breakfast at Skyview, both at 9:00 am.

 

And, on Saturday, weather permitting, our annual pontoon float will take place at 4:00.   Rain date will be Sunday.   Invite your neighbors to join you!
