It's official

 

The pier at the Carlin Lake boat landing is out of the water, and that means it is officially fall.

The crew of Bill, John, Danny, Cecil, and Duanne did a speedy job, and the pier is now stacked on the shoreline, waiting for next summer 

As usual, the team was motivated by delicious servings of Jeannie's hot-out-of-the-oven monkey bread.    Your photographer intended to snap a picture of the guys and the monkey bread---but guess I got too distracted with my own generous serving.

 

 

Thanks very much to all who help with the Carlin pier each spring and fall, and thanks very much to Jeannie for helping make that morning fun for all!

Wetlands and tamaracks

 

 

 

The tamaracks have been glowing, but as this photo shows, even they are a little past their peak gold.

The water pictured is not a lake---or even a woodland pond.  

It's the overflow from the wetlands across the road from our driveway, on Duranso's property.    I don't remember ever before seeing enough water collected there to cover their access road.

On Monday morning, the snow still remained from Saturday's snow showers.     

Rain, rain

 

If you are coming to the lake for the weekend, you will see beautiful colors---but you may also see some snow flurries.   This week's rain has made a dent in the glowing roadsides along local highways.  

Our rain gauge has measured 4 inches of rain just since Monday---and that is in addition a couple of other inches we have received earlier in October.   (And that's in addition to the 6" received in Septmber.)

 

 

 

 

Local conversations have centered on when we can expect to see some sunshine again.  But temps are colder, and that should bring some brisk and bright weather next week.   Everyone seems to agree that we aren't ready for measurable snow yet, though

Photos were taken within a dozen steps of our house this afternoon.

 

Monday news

 

1)   It's raining again, and is predicted to continue through the middle of the week.

2)   Bill Draves (brave or foolish??)  took his final swim of the season yesterday.   I hope he stayed in the water long enough to enjoy the bright colors on the shoreline.

3) Those of you on Facebook know that I saw a little bear along our driveway last week.    I was driving, but still looked around for mama, before I rolled down the window to take pictures.     Here, he seemed to think he was hiding from me behind this tree.     It was fun---I have never seen one so close to our house before. 

 

 

Weather

 

When there is no other news, there is always the weather.     And, we have had plenty of variety in the last days.

You already read below that we had 6 inches of rain in September.    Now, we have had another  2 1/2 inches in these first few days of October, with more predicted for next week.  

The storm responsible for much of that rain, Tuesday night into Wednesday, also knocked out our electrical power from about 8 pm to 4 am.    Most annoying was the intermittent flashes off and on, which kept every digital device in the house beeping and beeping.

 

If you follow Facebook, you have already seen this wintery photo that Clara posted this morning, showing a new snowfall on their Carlin lawn.   Surprisingly, though, those of us on the north side of the lake had no snow at all, and would not have believed it if we had not seen it.    It is plenty cold though, and snow would not be a surprise.

I am also attaching a picture I took on a hike to Wolf Mountain this week, just north of Hwy 2 and west of Marenisco.   I had never heard of this site before, so close to home, but the colors were spectacular---a great payoff for a short but steep hike!

 

Stay warm!   Stay dry!   Colors are still beautiful, but will be fading day by day with this drippy weather.

 

 

 

October already

If you are looking for lovely fall color, you don't have to go much further than our own Hwy P.    Trees are beautiful, even with many of the reds still to appear.   In my opinion, you should be hitting the peak color of the fall, if you are coming north for "leaf peeping" this weekend.           

Best fall color should still be ahead of us---if rain this week does not knock leaves off the trees.   I got drizzled on during my afternoon walk, and now it is raining harder.   Plus, forecast for Wednesday and Wednesday night is for heavier rain.

 

 

Did you know that we had 6" of rain during the month of September?    That amount is pretty accurate, as we compared amounts from rain gauges on either side of the lake.   So many inches of rain still seem a little hard to believe, with all the lovely warm summery days we also enjoyed during September.
