The past week, with welcome warm temperatures, has made pretty short work of most snow piles. Now, we are starting to wonder how long the ice cover can remain on the lake.
This photo shows the open water along the shoreline. But, predictions for the coming week indicate temperatures will drop below freezing every night, which will certainly slow the melting of ice on the lake.
In the 15 years I have been keeping track of ice-out date, the median date is April 19th (2009). ----Already past this year, of course.
The earliest ice-out has been March 20th (2012) and March 25th (2010).
Latest dates have been May 10th (2015) and May 9th (2014.)
With no official ice-out contest this spring, you will have to make your own prediction about when we may see open water this spring. If we all stay optimistic, maybe that will help!
Water looks crystal clear but was ice again today (4/27)!
