Spring has sprung!

 

The trees are leafing out; I noticed the first forget-me-nots on my walk today; and black flies are circling around our eyes and ears when we are outdoors.    It's lovely, and hopefully, many of you have plans to be at the lake next weekend for Memorial Day.

 

On May 12th, Marty Coonen had his pier in the water, and wondered if he may be the first for this season.  And now this week, we see that Badgers on one side of us and Malliets on the other side both have piers and boats in the water and are ready for summer.   

You will have received Rich Janusz's email, telling that the Carlin Boat Landing pier is also ready for you to launch your boat.     He reminded us that if we haven't, be sure to send him your $40 for the boat landing fee.    

 

 

 

 

Another "first" is Bill and Jeanne Huemann's intrepid and lively granddaughter Nora.  She's often the first and sometimes the last in the lake each season.  This year, she took a dip in the lake on May 17th.    Way to go, Nora!

Open water!

 

It's been fun to watch the end of the ice cover shift around the lake the last few days.   Sally and Mary, on the east end of the lake, reported earlier this week that their ice was all gone.

Then, on Thursday, when we couldn't see any ice on our west end, they reported that the ice had floated down their way.

Now, on May 5th, only the tiniest patches remain, and today's 60 degree temps should make short work of that.   So, we will call this ice-out for 2023.  The only dates later than this were May 9 and 10 in 2013 and 2014, and May 7 in 2018.   

It was a joy to watch the full moon reflected off the water last night, and to wake up to ripples this morning.

Gary Wise spotted the loon earlier this week, and we have heard the loon calls every morning.   Such good news!    

 

Sun across the lake this morning

 

It's a joy to have the sun this morning, after a long weekend of days when it seemed as though the April-May snow would keep falling forever.    

I hope the photo lets you see the open water on the lake, and the remaining ice cover on the south shorelines.      Sally wrote yesterday to report that their end of the lake is ice-free.
