Photos of downed trees along Hwy P

 

Here are some photos, to add to today's blog (below) about the storm on July 27th.

You will see that all four trees which blocked the road were within a mile of Carlin neighbors.   along Highway P.   I guess we were fortunate that there was not more damage.

 

 

A huge basswood blocked the road across from the Chancellor's driveway.   Another half, almost as large, was pointing in the opposite direction.

On the left in this picture, you have a glimpse of the huge upturned root ball, and then the tree that blocked the entrance to Carlin Lake Drive till Ron Bricco got there to open the road.

 

 

 

 

 

This huge tree was still blocking Hwy P at 2:00 this afternoon, just up from Carl Watras' home.   (One picture from each direction.)

July ends with a bang

 

Two storms, on Wednesday morning and Thursday evening, brought heavy rain and winds, and a generous amount of rain.   In the first storm, our rain gauge showed 2 1/4 inches of rain, and in yesterday's storm, we got 1 1/4 inches.   The lake level looks discernibly higher.

We were away from home for both storms, but drove home last evening just as the rain was letting up.   The biggest tree damage we saw was right here along Hwy P.  From Papoose Road to our driveway, we were able to drive around 4-5 limbs or trees which had fallen.   We also observed as we drove past that those of you on Carlin Lake Drive were blocked by a large tree across the entrance.

And, another large tree must have been blocking the road between our drive and Carlin Club Drive, as we could see taillights of about 4 cars stopped on the road.   It will be interesting to  go down this morning, to try to spot the remnants of that tree.

 

Sally Wise sent photos a couple of days ago  (and I'm sorry I wasn't able to transfer them) of the loon family, still on the lake.   Maybe you will be able to see them when you are on the water this weekend.   Our loon chick is much larger, brown and fuzzy.   I'm sure we are all delighted that the parents--and ourselves---have been able to keep this chick safe so far!

 

Book club is planning ahead

 

Since 2005, the Carlin Lake women have enjoyed meeting monthly to chat and discuss another book.    Our regular July meeting has usually been brought the largest gathering, when we have chosen our titles to read for the next year.   

This year, fourteen of us met at Mary's, had a pleasant social time, and selected the titles below to take us till July 2024.  

All women of the lake are always welcome----whether you are here seldom or often---whether you like reading or not.    And, if you cannot join us, you are invited to read along with us when you are able.

Wildlife in the woods

 

It's been fun spotting wildlife in the woods, including turtles, little fawns, our loon family of three, monarch butterflies, dragonflies, and yes, mosquitoes.  

Thankfully, even with recent rains this week---one of 3/4 inch, and last night, 1/2 inch---the mosquito crop is becoming more manageable.

Here are three photos, compliments of Bill Draves, of otters playing off his shore early in the morning, a tiny new-born fawn, and a baby porcupine.    I know spottings like this are part of what we all enjoy here in summer.

 

 

 

Loon family still on the lake

 

As of dusk on Tuesday, July 4th, the loon chick and family were still on the lake.    Carol Brewer reported that their family was charmed as they watched the loon family feeding and diving, not too far off their dock.  

They also reported what many of us watched with trepidation---two to four eagles keeping watch and soaring overhead.   Holiday boaters were keeping their distance, as we all held hope for the survival of the little chick.

Holiday at Houle's for the 4th

 

What a fun and delicious gathering on Sunday at the home of Steve and Kathy Houle!    They and their family were gracious and very welcoming.  Everyone said they'd had a great time, and were grateful for Steve and Kathy's generous hospitality.   

These photos were not planned, and thus, some groupings won't be helpful to you in learning names of neighbors you don't recognize.   A suggestion was made that, after taking some photos at the annual meeting, maybe we would all appreciate photos, for internal use only, showing us with the people who share our households.
